Sunday Poem Day

God Gave me a Gift
 by David Barton

Of all the blessings in my life
My home, my job, my lovely wife,
There is one gift unique and sweet,
That makes me whole, fulfilled, complete.

I prayed for children, and they came,
Three boys who bear the Barton name,
But only one is the prin-cess
The girl who came my life to bless.

So thank you Lord for Emma dear,
She is my darling, that is clear.
I love her laugh, her words, her smile,
Her crazy bligs, her facebook style,

I love the times she cuddles in
And lays her head beneath my chin.
My little girl she'll always be
Despite the fact she's far from me.

Please keep her safe, secure, and warm,
Please send her love, and grace, and charm.
And let her know that where ere she be,
That two men love her- you and me.

----

And this is why I have the best dad in the world.
Happy Father's Day, Dadio!
I love you to Pluto and back.

Love always,
Ems

Sunday Poem Day.

being to timelessness as it’s to time,
love did no more begin than love will end;
where nothing is to breathe to stroll to swim
love is the air the ocean and the land

(do lovers suffer?all divinities
proudly descending put on deathful flesh:
are lovers glad?only their smallest joy’s
a universe emerging from a wish)

love is the voice under all silences,
the hope which has no opposite in fear;
the strength so strong mere force is feebleness:
the truth more first than sun more last than star

—do lovers love?why then to heaven with hell.
Whatever sages say and fools, all’s well

-e.e. cummings
-----
I adore e.e. cummings. I love his style of poetry and the way in which he somehow captures pure human emotion.

I was talking to my friend, Chad a few days ago and he was telling me about how in his Marriage and Family class, he learned that apathy, not hate, is the opposite of love. I think it's very true, and incredibly interesting to think about in the context of this poem where cummings claims that love is the most essential part of life.

Of course, I agree with cummings. Love is such a natural instinct, one of the first that a child learns as he is cared for by his mother. For me, the existence of love in life is as natural as the air I breath, or as cumming says, the air, the ocean and the land. To live without love, in any form, would be a source of torture for me, I just couldn't do it.

Go out and love someone today, won't you?

Love always,
Ems

Sunday Poem Day.

THE WORLD is charged with the grandeur of God.
  It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
  It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;        5
  And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
  And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
  There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;        10
And though the last lights off the black West went
  Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs—
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
  World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

-Gerard Manley Hopkins
------
I've decided that since I have such an obsession with poetry, I'm going to start posting my favorite poem of the week each Sunday. This week, in Dr. Walker's class, we read Hopkins. As difficult as Hopkins can be to understand, I think that the imagery of his poetry is almost matchless. There is something invigorating about the ending of this poem and the hope that seems to come in the bright wings.

Maybe the reason I like this poem so much is because I feel that this poem, particularly, reaffirms my belief that poetry is a form of Godly creation. Somehow, the amazing poets of the centuries have captured the essence of humanity and God in their poetry. Forever, I will be amazed by their genius.

Love always,
Ems
